He got hurt on the job and his doctor needed a scan to decide what to do next. While Michael was worried about surgery, he was also feeling uneasy about the MRI. But when he arrived at a center within the RAYUS network in MA he relaxed. The technologist (or \u201ctech\u201d) who helped him through the exam showed him the High-field Open MRI where he would get his scan. It didn\u2019t look at all like a traditional MRI machine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s almost like an open middle that you slide right in,\u201d Michael says. \u201cIt\u2019s not really tight and claustrophobic like you would think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After getting the scan, Michael described the experience as more \u201ccomfortable\u201d and \u201ceasy-going\u201d than he expected. His fears, it turned out, were unfounded.<\/p>\n<h3>Taking a Personal Approach<\/h3>\n<div id=\"component_2703\" class=\"richtext\">\n<p>Techs have a lot of tricks up their sleeves. They see patient after patient who would rather be doing almost anything other than getting an MRI. So understanding your anxiety is the foundation of getting their job done. Melissa describes her approach:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe help patients in any way we can. The goal is to get them through the test. And it really is different depending on the patient the approach you\u2019re going to take. You have to really get in tune with the patient, find out what their need is. A good way to find out is asking, \u2018Exactly what are you afraid of?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it\u2019s as simple as explaining how the exam works. When you get an MRI, you can often bring in a friend or relative to sit in a chair right next to you. The design of the <a title=\"High-field Open MRI in Kirkland\" href=\"https:\/\/rayusradiology.com\/locations\/kirkland\/#mri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">High-field Open MRI<\/a>, available in Kirkland, allows you to reach out your arm and hold someone\u2019s hand for reassurance.<\/p>\n<p>RAYUS patient Steven Gordon expected to feel claustrophobic, but what he didn\u2019t expect was a helping hand. When he started to feel anxious, one of RAYUS\u2019s techs pulled up a chair and held his hand through the exam.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-121\" src=\"https:\/\/rayusradiology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Headphones.jpg\" alt=\"Tech putting headphones and sleep mask on patient\" width=\"159\" height=\"212\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Using Distractions of the Senses<\/h3>\n<div id=\"component_2707\" class=\"richtext\">\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"\/_asset\/7jjs2f\/small\/Headphones.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"287\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Technologists use tricks of distraction techniques to get patients through an MRI \u2013 open or traditional \u2013 more comfortably. The less you\u2019re focused on your fears, the better you\u2019ll do in a scan. That\u2019s why you get a menu of options before your MRI to help distract you from worrying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sound:<\/strong>\u00a0Headphones let you listen to the music of your choice and earplugs help you block out some of the MRI sounds. Some patients use both.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sight:<\/strong>\u00a0Sleep masks cover your eyes and block out your view. Reflective glasses use mirrors, so instead of looking up into the top of the machine, you have a view toward your toes and can see out into the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who are really claustrophobic need a distraction a lot of times or something to dull or heighten some of the senses,\u201d explains Bethany.
