RAYUS Radiology in Federal Way and Lakewood, WA is now partnering with Dr. Blackwelder\u2019s team at the <a title=\"Breast Diagnostic Center Website\" href=\"http:\/\/breastdiagnostic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Breast Diagnostic Center<\/a> to provide patients with breast MRIs.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HTQlOtFSr0A\/?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div id=\"component_1350\" class=\"headline\">\n<h3>Breast MRI Images<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"component_1351\" class=\"richtext\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"component_1351\" class=\"richtext\">\n<p>An estimated <a title=\"Breastcancer.org website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.breastcancer.org\/symptoms\/understand_bc\/statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 in 8 women<\/a> in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer according to BreastCancer.org. For most women, mammograms are the first line of defense in the diagnosis of breast cancer. <a title=\"cancer.gov website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/bcrisktool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Here\u2019s a tool<\/a> from the National Cancer Institute that helps you determine your own personal risk. Women with higher risk sometimes need ultrasound or breast MRI to help with diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>MRI is used to stage the cancer or see if there is any more in either breast and to evaluate the lymph nodes.<\/li>\n<li>MRI is used to check high-risk women \u2013 those who have over a 20% lifetime risk based on family history and medical history.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"component_1354\" class=\"headline\">\n<h3>Breast MRI Machine<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"component_1355\" class=\"richtext\">\n<p>If you\u2019re scheduled for a breast MRI, your first stop is the changing room where you\u2019ll put on a gown. At RAYUS, a female technician then helps get you situated face down on the table. Like any other MRI, this exam is motion sensitive, so you\u2019ll have to get comfortable and then hold still for the scans. RAYUS has an 8-channel coil, which gives very highly detailed images for the radiologist to read. Think of it like this: more channels=more detail.<\/p>\n<p>Randy Jorgensen, a RAYUS MRI technologist guides patients through the breast exam. \u201cWe\u2019ll take multiple picture for typically about 25 minutes and then we\u2019ll give you an injection and then take more pictures,\u201d Randy explains. \u201cWe give the injection so if there\u2019s any blood flow going to abnormal tissue in your breast, we\u2019ll see that.\u201d In less than an hour, the scan looks from your armpit all the way through to your chest wall for a comprehensive look at both breasts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"component_1357\" class=\"headline\">\n<h3>Breast MRI Results<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"richtext\">\n<div id=\"component_1358\" class=\"richtext\">\n<p>The results of your scan will come from your doctor, who uses the MRI images to guide decisions about surgery and treatment. Breast MRI gives high quality images and helps you get answers quickly. Dr. Blackwelder says once he looks at the images, he is armed with information his patients need. \u201cI will spend as much time as necessary with the patient to discuss. Any question you have, we\u2019ll answer and do our best.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"component_1360\" class=\"headline\">\n<h3>Breast Cancer Advocate Shares Her Story<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"component_1361\" class=\"richtext\">\n<div id=\"component_1361\" class=\"richtext\">\n<p>Eleven years ago, Linda Carey was diagnosed with breast cancer. After surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and a clinical trial, doctors found more cancer in her liver. Today, her new normal includes an IV drip every 3 weeks and oral medication 7 days on and 7 days off. She\u2019s gone through every emotion on the spectrum and says post-diagnosis, it\u2019s important to find your own path.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/HTQlOtFSr0A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Watch Linda&#8217;s Story<\/a><br \/>\n<em>\u201cI think some people probably freak out. Some people say, ok, what am I going to do? What do I need to do?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"component_1423\" class=\"richtext\">\n<p>For Linda, one of her first steps was getting the facts, but not the gory details you can find on the internet. She put her sister in charge of research and used her as a filter for need-to-know information. Through her ongoing battle, Linda co-founded the\u00a0<a title=\"carey foundation website\" href=\"http:\/\/careyfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carey Foundation<\/a>, an organization dedicated to raising money to support breast cancer patients with the incidental costs of treatment. Whether it\u2019s transportation to and from a doctor\u2019s appointment or providing childcare for patients during chemo, the Carey Foundation helps provide a network of support.<\/p>\n<p>And it has become a personal mission of Linda\u2019s to share what she calls her \u201cpositive approach\u201d to cancer. Her tips include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Find a great doctor<\/li>\n<li>Be your own advocate \u2013 and if you don\u2019t feel you\u2019re strong enough, find someone who can help<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t be afraid to ask questions<\/li>\n<li>If you don\u2019t understand the answers, ask more questions<\/li>\n<li>Give yourself space to have cancer \u2013 there will be bad days, and give yourself room to have them, but limit your time to do that then get back to your life<\/li>\n<li>Have a sense of humor \u2013 fill your life with as much laughter as possible<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Always upfront about her experience, Linda doesn\u2019t deny that the past 11 years have taken a toll. But she continues to pour her energy into the Carey Foundation, trying to make a difference for anyone fighting her fight. \u201cI feel very fortunate that I am alive and that I do have a very full life.
